In the green hell of the Amazon

Located mainly in Brazil, between Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, the region of the Amazon, in southern America, is covered by one of the densest forests in the world and is more than five times larger than Iran.

Many large rivers originating in the Andes cordillera, which runs at the western edge of the southern American continent, flow in this area and constitute the sole means of communication for the indigenous population. The Amazon is the second longest river in the world and holds one fifth of the planet's sweet waters. The existence of all this water has caused the greatest forests in the world, which provide most of the oxygen needed by all living beings, to grow here. These dense forests are inhabited by various tribes whose villages are hard and dangerous to reach. As many researchers have shown, the American continent was uninhabited until some 30,000 years ago. Hence, we were concerned in our three-year-long studies with finding out when and how the first men appeared on this continent. We arrived in the Colombian capital, Bogotá, where we were the guests of the country's national university. We spent two months in Bogotá, preparing for a trip of several months in the heart of the Amazon forests. The best gifts we could offer to the tribes we came across were matches, lighters, cigarettes, salt, colorful fabrics, mirrors and combs. In Bogotá, we were received in audience by the Colombian president, who ordered military airplanes to take us on flights over Potomayo River both before and after our arduous trek in the deep Amazon forest.

We took off carrying some 500 kilograms of foodstuff, a boat engine and gifts for the indigenous people. An hour later we found ourselves above the Andes and soon after got our first glimpse of the dense Amazon forest, realizing that hard days lay ahead.Progressing in the rainforest and dealing with the indigenous tribes were not easy tasks. After flying for several hours in a single engine aquaplane, we alit on Potomayo River, near a village by the name of Mitu, inhabited by a few families of fishermen. We spent one week in this village gathering informations and preparing our trek. We were able to communicate with the members of the tribe, who had occasional contacts with white people and spoke some Spanish. Here we acquired a large boat carved out of a tree trunk, intending to travel as far as the area of the Yagua tribe, one of the most primitive communities living in the Amazon rainforests.

We approached the area of the Yagua tribe after traveling thirteen days in our boat and facing various dangers. Our troubles did not end there. Indeed, the most perilous part of our trip was only beginning . No other white men had ever set foot in this region and those who had approached it had been killed.s So, please bear with us and hear about the difficulties and dangers we faced during our five-month-long trip in this "green hell" .s

In order to save ourselves from wild animals, at nights we used to hang our hammock on top of the trees to rest inside it!!

Human head hunters of Jivaro tribe, Amazon Heads are real and belong to mature human beings. They have been shrinked to an orange. After murdering their enemies from other tribes or killing the white skinned humans, the Jivaro would undersize their heads to decorate their huts. Macomo River, Amazon.
Chief of the Yagua tribe is the only man who knows how to make the “Kurareh” poison which is used on the spear top or darts of the blow guns while his elder son is making the arrows.
Upon their return from hunting, the youth managed to bring a large number of monkeys, different birds and turtles. Then men and women started on holding the ceremonies. On that night roasted monkeys made the tablecloth more colorful!!
When passing through the Putumayo River, we threw our fishing hook in the water. After a while, out of our expectation, we noticed we have caught a large “cat fish”, weighing about 70 kg. Continuing our way, we reached the small village of local fishermen who were surprised to see the fish we had caught. They said they had never caught such a big fish!
Maloka, a large mat-house which is used by almost 15 households of the Yagua tribe. Each member sleeps on a hammock which is tied up inside the maloka.

Two kinds of snake, Boa and Piton are not poisonous, but they can be very powerful constrictor. These types of snakes can get as long as 11 meters. As we lived closely with the natives in the forest we were also close to the animals.
By this dug-out canoe which was made of a trunk, together with four guides and porters, also 300 kilos of our equipment, we were proceeding ahead for about 13 days on the Putomayo River. Hunting a “Tapir” had left us no room inside the canoe.
